October 11, 2009 - "Be Careful How You Treat Your Parents" - Ephesians 6:1-2

One of God’s greatest desires and also my desire is that our young people would be blessed. It has always been the desire of God and should be the desire of every parent that the next generation would do better than the previous generation.   From Israel, God’s chosen nation in the Bible, to now, we should be trying to get the next generation to inherit the blessings that God so much wants to give His people. There is an inheritance at stake for our children; however, there are some requirements that must be met.

In the book of Deuteronomy, God shared his desires for his people through the Ten Commandments on stone tablets that Moses had destroyed.   In issuing these commandments, God was trying to prepare the next generation of Israelites to go into the promise land and maintain or keep the land once they settled in the land. I believe before God ever takes us to our next blessed place, before God ever moves us to our “promise land”, He prepares us to be able to capture the land and he also prepares us to be able stay in the land that we possess.

For our young people today, one the key principle or commandment that God gives them is to obey their parents. Both in Deuteronomy 5:16 and again in Ephesians 6:1-2, God gives the command to honor your father and mother. Obedience to this commandment allows children to live a long life and a blessed life.

For so many parents, one of the most difficult things that they are trying to do is raise their children. The struggle is God versus the world.   We are physically giving to them and yet spiritually they seem to be getting less and less. Deuteronomy 5:16 is the spiritual guidance that they need. We need to teach our children if they follow the spiritual commandments of God then there is an inheritance waiting for them.

The Commandment, “Obey your Parents” is a commandment with promise. It states that obedience will produce an extended and blessed life. There used to be a time when people seemed to be guaranteed to live out their lives because they lived right. Nowadays, many young people are not making it to adulthood because they are living directly opposite to the lives that their parents and the Word of God had tried to teach them.

Children are challenged with peer pressure. The normal things of “go to school”, “make good grades”, and “behave in school” are not the norm any more. More and more children are dropping out of school, doing drugs and joining gangs in school. However, all the training starts at home with the Word of God.

We have to start at home. We have to teach our children that God doesn’t bless disobedient children.   God loves us as children; however, the Word says he disciplines the ones he loves. God has so much in store for our children. They are promised to be blessed if they would obey the commands of God’s Word.

My prayer is, “Lord, help us to raise children who will be obedient to God’s Word and to their parents. Thank you Lord, in advance that our children’s lives will be prolonged and we be blessed. In Jesus name. AMEN.
